Meet the Cromwell Family in Special Collections

Published November 3, 2026

Special Collections Reading Room
Neilson Library, 3rd floor
10 a.m.-12 p.m.; 1-4:45 p.m.

The Cromwell Family has close ties and great significance to Smith College. Otelia Cromwell, class of 1900, was the first African American graduate, while Adelaide M. Cromwell, class of 1940, was the first African American faculty member as an Instructor in Sociology.

Smith College Special Collections preserves and provides access to the Cromwell Family papers. Visit the third floor of Neilson Library to explore this remarkable collection, including books Otelia read, Adelaide’s photographs and baby book, family diplomas, correspondence, and so much more.

At 2 p.m., we are honored that Anna H. Davis will be joining us to share her memories and answer your questions about her family.

Mrs. Davis is a descendant of the historic McGuinn and Cromwell families—including her great-aunt Otelia Cromwell and cousin Adelaide McGuinn Cromwell. A lifelong genealogy enthusiast, Anna worked alongside her sister, Mary H. Lightfoot, to research and preserve their family's legacy. A Cheyney University graduate, Anna is a retired Philadelphia special education teacher, former department chair, and former Vice President of the Board for Radnor A Better Chance, Inc.
