After more than two years of extensive work by Smith College Special Collections staff and students, nearly 56,000 pages of student publications and records spanning from 1880 through the present day have been digitized and made available to the public to view.
Prior to this project, which began in 2022, similar efforts were made to digitize roughly 71,000 pages of Smith materials, including early records of the college, manuscript materials, and other Smith publications. This particular effort, however, has focused heavily on the student experience, and includes publications such as The Sophian, student handbooks, Smith College Associated News, Information for Entering Students, and much more.

Completion of the Serials Digitization Project was made possible through many dedicated hours of work from College Archives staff and students, as well as a generous bequest by Smith College Medal recipient and alumna Jane Wallace ’47. Wallace was a longtime donor to the College Archives, often providing funds for student projects, preservation supplies, and acquisitions to the Archives. Thanks to her generosity, College Archives staff were able to work with Backstage Library Works, a third-party vendor that assists libraries with preserving, organizing, and describing collections to enhance discovery and user access.
